Extending this activity

  • -Invite siblings or friends to read "Caps for Sale" with you and take on the roles of the monkeys.

-As you share literature together, encourage your child to be on the lookout for nursery rhymes or books that provide opportunities for visualizing and acting things out. "Whistle for Willie" by Ezra Jack Keats is a great example of one to try.

Adjust for an older child

Offer fewer acting suggestions to the older child. Observe how he makes decisions about acting out the words that he hears, and reread the sentences that prove too difficult at first.

Adjust for a younger child

As you read the text aloud, model playing the role of the peddler.
