Extending this activity

  • -Read "The Library Lion" by Michelle Knudsen to encourage a love of the library and to familiarize children with some vocabulary related to the library.

-Visit the library and use the library services (computer, librarian help desk) to search for a book about a particular subject or by a particular author.

Adjust for an older child

Conduct a 'picture walk' through the book with an older child. Ask the child questions such as "What do you think this book will be about? What made you want to read this book?" After discussing the cover, 'walk' through each page and talk about the pictures.

Adjust for a younger child

Take younger children to a library and allow them to look through board books with you and at their own pace. They will enjoy turning the pages as you point out items of interest.
