Extending this activity

  • -Read another fun book with repetitive text- "Who Ate All the Cookie Dough?" by Karen Beaumont.

-Think of some phrases that are often repeated in your own home. Staple a few sheets of paper together to make a book and write a simple story about your child using the repeated phrase.

Adjust for an older child

Older children can detect other elements of pattern in the text such as the increasing quantities of food and the sequence of the days of the week. Invite them to predict the text on the following page based on their understanding of the pattern.

Adjust for a younger child

Younger children often need repeated experiences with the same book before they will pick up on the pattern and be able to chime in. Revisit favorite books often and emphasize the repeated language.
