Choosing the Right Voice

Talk about when we should speak more loudly or softly. How should our volume be different at the playground compared to the library?

Extending this activity

  • -Read "The Laughing Giraffe", an African animal tale by Mwenye Hadithi.

    -Before entering any new situation like a museum, place of worship, or sporting event, briefly discuss what type of voice is most appropriate to use.

Adjust for an older child

Use a measuring tape to measure the distance you and your child can stand apart and still communicate with a whisper.

Adjust for a younger child

Ask a younger child to repeat short phrases using a quiet voice and then a loud voice. Discuss which voice is most appropriate for the playground and which is most appropriate for the library.

  1. I did it with both of my girls, they were very attentive. It helps to prepare them for when we are in the a location where we have to use different voices.
