Extending this activity

  • -Use this opportunity to expose the child to less common types of fruit to build his or her vocabulary. Some good examples would be kiwi, papaya, or huckleberry.

    -Read "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" by Virginia Lee Burton and have the child clap to show the syllables in each character's name.

Adjust for an older child

An older child can think of additional categories of items to clap (for example: clapping toys, things found outside, items of clothing, etc).

Adjust for a younger child

For a younger child, take his or her hands in your own and clap together.
