Extending this activity

  • -Record all the combinations you found. Ask questions such as: "Is one gummy plus four jelly beans the same as one jelly bean and four gummies? Why or why not? How are they different? How are they the same?"

-Read the book "Ten Friends" by Bruce Goldstone. Talk about the different combinations of friends that could come to the party to make ten guests. For example, seven salty sailors and three loud drummers.

Adjust for an older child

Use a total of six candies and record all the combinations. For example, 1 gummy + 5 jelly beans is one combination.

Adjust for a younger child

Only use three total candies with younger children.
