Echo Game

Slowly say the sounds in a word (d-o-g) and ask your child to echo back the word blending the sounds together (dog).

Extending this activity

  • -As the child becomes proficient in segmenting sounds in one syllable words, encourage him to name any letters that he knows that represent the sounds.

    -Read the book "Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book!" and emphasize the beginning sounds of each letter.

Adjust for an older child

Allow the child to segment the word, and you will echo the word back.

Adjust for a younger child

Say the word and then segment the sounds slowly (Dog. /d/, /o/, /g/). Allow the child to repeat after you.
