Young engineers will enjoy making a ramp from books and a cookie sheet. Race toy cars to see which comes in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Extending this activity

  • -Experiment with different heights of the ramp. Allow for the ramp to be more or less steep. Does the same car always come in first?

    -Read “The First Day of Winter” by Denise Fleming. Ordinal numbers are highlighted in this story about a snowman that comes alive.

Adjust for an older child

Use five cars for the contest. Use the terms first, second, third, fourth, and fifth when describing their position.

Adjust for a younger child

Only use two cars in the activity, focusing on the words “first” and “second.” Once the child is comfortable with those terms, you can move on to “third,” etc.
