Following Directions

While waiting, play a game of following directions using position words like over, behind, under, above, in front of, etc.

Extending this activity

  • -Stress directional words in other situations. When the child is getting dressed, say "Pull the sweater over your head. Put your foot inside your sock."

    -Read "Bears in the Night" by Stan and Jan Berenstain, and mimic the directional actions of the bears.

Adjust for an older child

Allow the child to provide the directions using the directional words. You will follow the child’s directions.

Adjust for a younger child

Work on only two directional words per game session. Start with under and over.
