As you shop at the grocery store, compare and contrast fruits and vegetables using rich descriptive words.

Extending this activity

  • -Read "Go, Go, Grapes!: A Fruit Chant" or "Rah, Rah, Radishes!: A Vegetable Chant" by April Pulley Sayre. Continue the conversation about variety of colors and textures of fruits and vegetables.

    -Language rich conversation can happen in the car too! Invite your child to notice the variety of buildings and landscapes by commenting on their colors and shapes.

Adjust for an older child

Turn the conversation into a game. Describe the items on your grocery list using words that detail the color, texture, or other interesting details.

Adjust for a younger child

Provide rich language input by narrating what you are doing as you shop for groceries. Invite the child to contribute as much as he is able.
