Extending this activity

  • -Repeat the song leaving out the word "head", but have the children still do the movement. Continue singing the song without saying the key words (head, shoulders, knees, toes) but have the children still perform the motions. Leave in the line "Eyes and ears and mouth and nose" so that the children have a reference point in the song.

-Read the book "Counting Kisses" by Karen Katz and identify each part of the body mentioned in the book.

Adjust for an older child

After singing the song together, have the child name the parts of the body that were mentioned in the song. Point to your own knee, head, shoulder, or toes and have the child name the part. Talk about what that part of the body is used for.

Adjust for a younger child

Sing the song to the child while holding his or her hand. Guide the child's hand to touch his or her head, shoulders, knees, and toes as you sing the song.
