How Many Can You Name?

Give your child a category such as transportation. See how many examples you can identify that belong to that category (car, train, etc.).

Extending this activity

  • -Read "Cars, Trucks and Things that Go" by Richard Scarry and talk about the different kinds of vehicles in the book.

    -While driving in the car name as many things that you can in a group. For example, things with two wheels (scooter, motorcycle, bicycle), four wheels, things that fly, etc.

Adjust for an older child

Older children can sort into categories based on attributes, such as shape, color, size, and function. Be creative with the categories (e.g., things that are round, things that are red, things that have tails). Allow them to think of a category.

Adjust for a younger child

Younger children may need objects or pictures to help name things in a category. Decide on a familiar category (food, colors, clothes, toys, etc.), and cut out pictures from magazines or advertisements for grouping together.
