Extending this activity

  • -Make a picture book to show the progression of adding feet to the bed. On the first page, have the child draw one rectangle for the bed and add one person. Write ______ feet at the top of the page and help the child write the number in the blank. Continue creating the book until the entire family is in the picture book!

-Read “How Many Feet in the Bed” by Diane Johnston Hamm.

Adjust for an older child

Ask additional questions such as, “If two people got out of the bed, then how many feet would be in the bed?” “If our dog were to get in the bed, how many feet would there be?”

Adjust for a younger child

Beginning with one child in the bed, count his or her feet. Add one person at a time and count feet as you go ("one, two," add a person, "three, four," add a person, "five, six," etc.).
