Extending this activity

  • -Read the book “Splash” by Ann Jonas. Recreate the addition and subtraction stories from the book. Record your addition and subtraction sentences on paper.

-When you are done playing in the water, write out the child's joining story and add in pictures to illustrate the animals that were added to the pool.

Adjust for an older child

Include subtraction with your stories. For example, “There are four ducks in the pond. Four more ducks land in the pond. One flies out. How many are in my pond?”

Adjust for a younger child

Use only two types of animals. Make sure the child touches each animal as he or she is counting the total.
