Extending this activity

  • -Play the game again, but this time ask “Who do you think will land closer to the starting point?” When comparing the numbers drawn from the deck, ask questions such as “Who has the greater number?” “Who has the smaller number?” “How do you know?”

-Read “A Frog Thing” by Eric Drachman. In this story, Frank the frog wants to fly instead of hop. Discuss with your child which would be faster for Frank- hopping, flying, or swimming. Have the child justify his reasoning by explaining his answer. Find a park with a pond. Observe birds, fish, and frogs. Which move faster?

Adjust for an older child

Draw two number cards, and hop the sum of the two numbers.

Adjust for a younger child

Write the numbers 1-10 on the lily pads before playing the game.
