Extending this activity

  • -Using a doll or action figure, demonstrate the actions of Jack in the nursery rhyme “Jack be Nimble” while changing the position words : "Jack be nimble. Jack be quick. Jack jumped over the candlestick."

-Read "Mother Goose Picture Puzzles" by Will Hillenbrand. This book includes 'Little Miss Muffet' and other rhymes with pictures to facilitate reading.

Adjust for an older child

Instead of using a baby doll, older children will enjoy taking turns playing the role of Miss Muffet and the spider.

Adjust for a younger child

Young children benefit from repeatedly hearing you chant traditional rhymes. As you chant, playfully adapt the position words and show how Miss Muffet can sit beside, behind, in front of, or beneath the tuffet.
