Looking for Letters in Ads

Take advantage of grocery store advertisements to make a game of looking for letters while you shop.

Extending this activity

  • -While driving in the car, ask the child to look for the individual letters of his name on road signs and billboards.

    -Read "Curious George's ABCs" by H.A.Ray. Place magnetic letters in a bag, and ask the child to grab a letter and match it to the colored letters on each page.

Adjust for an older child

Encourage the child to first look for the letter 'A' in the advertisement and then proceed looking for the rest of the letters in alphabetic order. Model singing through the ABC song to help him remember the order of the letters in the alphabet.

Adjust for a younger child

Say the name of a specific grocery item as you show it to the child. Encourage the child to repeat the item’s name. Be sure to allow the child to see your mouth as you are naming the object.
