Extending this activity

  • -Ask the child to draw a colorful picture and 'hide' numbers in the drawing. Then a friend, parent, or sibling can find the numbers.

-Read the book “City by Numbers” by Stephen T. Johnson. In this book, the author has cleverly disguised a different number on each page. Children enjoy finding the hidden numbers.

Adjust for an older child

Introduce numbers larger than ten. For example, “I spy a number with a one and five in it.” When the child finds the 15, say “Yes, that is the number 15.”

Adjust for a younger child

Choose a page in the magazine where the numbers are close together and more prominent on the page. Ask the child to find numbers one through five.
