Extending this activity

  • -Allow the child to experiment with the measuring cups by seeing how many 1/4 cups fit into a 1/2 cup and a whole cup. Do the same with the 1/2 cup. Tell the child you want to double the recipe, meaning you will need to measure each ingredient twice. Ask them how you would triple the recipe.

-Read the book “What’s Up with that Cup?” by Sheila Keenan. In this story, a young girl discovers the importance of using the correct size measuring cup.

Adjust for an older child

Take away the 1/2 cup. When the recipe calls for half cup, discuss how you could use two 1/4 cups to equal 1/2. You could 'prove' it to the child by pouring two 1/4 cups into the 1/2 cup.

Adjust for a younger child

Help the child measure; omit asking the child what 1/2 and 1/4 means. Adjust the recipe to use only 1 cup and 1/2 cup.
