Extending this activity

  • -Read "The Jolly Postman" by Allan Ahlberg and enjoy opening tiny envelopes with letters from favorite fairy tale characters.

-Allow your child to dictate a letter to a favorite friend. After addressing the envelope to the friend, allow your child to copy or watch you write your own address in the return address section.

Adjust for an older child

Using the same tune, sing a verse about your city, state, and zip code: "My city is Los Angeles. My city is Los Angeles. My city is Los Angeles, California, 90008."

Adjust for a younger child

Lay the foundation for later memorizing the address by asking your child to help you find your home as you arrive on your street. Ask him how he knows which home is yours. Once he can recognize numbers, point out the house numbers on your door, sidewalk, or mailbox.
