Extending this activity

  • -Sort items in another cabinet using the same rule of cylinders and boxes. Discuss what to do with items that don’t fit into those categories (ie: tweezers in the bathroom cabinet).

-Read “Spotted Yellow Frogs” by Matthew Van Fleet. Not only does this book include colors, patterns, and great vocabulary, but it also incorporates three dimensional shapes.

Adjust for an older child

After the activity, ask the child to find other cylinders in the house.

Adjust for a younger child

Use fewer items and allow more time for the child to roll the cylinders to reinforce the idea of curved sides. While younger children will probably not remember words like “cylinder” at this time, it is okay to introduce the vocabulary in context.
