Putting Away Dishes

Keep out ten plates. Ask your child to close her eyes. Put away three plates. When she opens her eyes, ask how many you put away.

Extending this activity

  • -Write down subtraction sentences to make the connection between the action of “putting away” or “hiding” and subtraction.

    -Read the book "A Frog in the Bog" by Karma Wilson. In this fun counting book, a frog eats his way through the bog one item at a time and then shrinks down one item at a time.

Adjust for an older child

With an older child, use ten dishes for the activity.

Adjust for a younger child

Ask the child “how many are in the cabinet?”, and then open the cabinet for him to count the dishes.
