As you put away the groceries, talk about the different items. How are they alike and different? How does that affect where we store them?

Extending this activity

  • -Practice categorizing other items the child encounters such as furniture items, toys, vehicles, and electronics.

    -Read "How Did That Get In My Lunchbox?: The Story of Food" by Chris Butterworth to increase awareness of how and where our food comes from.

Adjust for an older child

The older child may think of additional items that fit in each category. Although those particular items weren’t in the grocery bags, the child can extend his or her thinking by brainstorming additional items.

Adjust for a younger child

Practice naming the grocery items with your younger child.
