Extending this activity

  • -Talk to the child about categorizing the food as pastry, fruit, vegetable, or dairy. Arrange the items in the cart by food category.

-Read "Eating the Alphabet: Fruits from A to Z" by Lois Ehlert and have the child point out any items you bought at the store.

Adjust for an older child

As you put items in the cart, allow the child to say the item name and the letter that the item begins with. He can place items together at the checkout stand that begin with the same sound.

Adjust for a younger child

As the child rides in the cart, engage him in conversation about the various food items. Encourage the child to name the items as you put them in the cart.
