Extending this activity

  • -The parent and child can write a summary sentence about the story. Ask the child to draw a picture that shows what the story was about.

-Read a different version of the familiar folktale such as "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig" by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury. Before reading, conduct a picture walk and discuss how the pictures are similar or different from the original story.

Adjust for an older child

After modeling an example on the first page, allow the child to use the pictures to retell the entire story.

Adjust for a younger child

Point at the pictures and prompt the child to name objects in the illustrations. Support the child by creating a summary sentence about the page.
