Extending this activity

  • -Read "The Duchess Bakes a Cake" by Virginia Kahl. At the end of each page, see how many rhyming pairs you can recall from the text.

-Let the child place several of his or her toys in a bag. Play 'Rhyming Purse' again with those items.

Adjust for an older child

Ask the child to pull one item from your purse and create a rhyming word on his or her own. The words can be real or nonsense.

Adjust for a younger child

Allow the child to pull one item out of your purse or bag. Name the item, and then tell the child a word (real or nonsense) that rhymes with the item. Ask the child to repeat the pair of rhyming words with you.
