Extending this activity

  • -Play hot potato in a group with at least three people. Quickly say rhyming words and toss the ball every time a word is said.

-Playfully rhyme people’s names. The rhymes may be silly nonsense words (Chilly Billy, Fairy Mary, Ken Ten, Kelsey Welsey, Rosie Posie). The goal is to develop the concept of rhyming and a playful approach to words.

Adjust for an older child

Allow the child to think of the word and toss the ball to the adult who says a rhyming word.

Adjust for a younger child

Initiate saying the rhyming words and have the child repeat the words you say. Roll the ball on the ground as you say the words together.
