Extending this activity

  • -Read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" by Bill Martin Jr. After reading the book together, allow the child to point at various letters and name them. After the child names the letter, say the letter name and the sound it makes.

-Choose three different magnetic letters and bring them to the park. Find objects that begin with the new letter sounds outside.

Adjust for an older child

Allow the child to name random items in the cart. Support the older child in identifying the sound that the word begins with.

Adjust for a younger child

As you wait in line at the store say the names of items in the cart, emphasizing the beginning sounds. Encourage the child to repeat the name of the item after you.
