Share a meal with your child at a restaurant. Talk about how to divide it equally.

Extending this activity

  • -Try the same activity with other foods at home but add another person (divide between three people, four people, etc). Discuss the number each person gets when you add more people.

    -Read “The Doorbell Rang” by Pat Hutchins. In this story, each time the doorbell rings more guests arrive to share Ma’s cookies.

Adjust for an older child

Count the items before the division. Have the child estimate how many each person will get. Divide the food items and check the prediction.

Adjust for a younger child

Perform the activity, but start with fewer food items.
