Sink or Float

Do a sink or float experiment in your kitchen sink with some household items. Use rich words like “buoyant” to discuss your results!

Extending this activity

  • -Read a fun, fictional story about sinking and floating in "Who Sank the Boat?" written by Pamela Allen.

    -Bath time is a perfect opportunity to continue testing hypotheses about whether toys, soap, or shampoo bottles are buoyant or not.

Adjust for an older child

Older children may generate a list of items and talk about whether they would or would not float.

Adjust for a younger child

Younger children may simply listen and drop the items in the water as the adult talks about whether they float or not.
