  • -As the child develops an awareness of individual sounds in simple, one syllable words such as man, dog, and cat, encourage him to stretch each word and say it slowly. After saying man slowly, ask the child what letter makes the /m/ sound, the /a/ sound, and the /n/ sound. Write the letters as the child says them so that he can see that the letters represent the individual sounds in the word.

    -Read "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" by Al Perkins which is also available in a board book version for younger children.

Encourage the child to choose words to segment and drum. Use a familiar book such as "Three Little Pigs" and encourage the child to select words to segment by looking at the pictures.

Ajuste para un niño menor

Allow the child to say the sounds and words with the adult. The adult may hold the child’s hand to support him in drumming the sounds.
