Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Practice careful listening by deciding if words are the same or different. Say “dog, dog” (thumbs up), “dog, log” (thumbs down), etc.

Extending this activity

  • -Take turns with the child saying paired words. Encourage the child to indicate the name of the letter that he or she hears at the beginning of the words.

    -Read "The Old Man and His Door" by Gary Soto. Enjoy this story of an old man who encountered many challenges because he did not listen carefully to the differences between words.

Adjust for an older child

Allow the child to say two words and the adult will determine same or different.

Adjust for a younger child

Say words slowly, enunciating sounds. The child will repeat the words.
