Extending this activity

  • -Read "A Fly Went By" by Mike McClintock. Talk about each animal and identify which word in the story rhymes with it.

-Make rhyme 'families' to hang on the refrigerator. Simply cut out fun shapes of colored paper, write a rhyming word on each one (such as cat, fat, sat, bat, and rat), and tape them together.

Adjust for an older child

Say a word and have the child say a rhyming word in response. Sometimes the child will make up a silly word. This is perfectly fine as long as it fits the rhyming pattern!

Adjust for a younger child

The younger child can repeat a series of rhyming words modeled by the adult.
