Extending this activity

  • -Introduce further vocabulary such as symmetry. For example, when you cut the two triangles on the diagonal, it creates symmetrical triangles. When you cut two rectangles, it creates symmetrical rectangles.

-Read “Sea Shapes” by Suse MacDonald and uncover the many shapes found in the sea.

Adjust for an older child

Investigate other ways to cut a sandwich. Challenge the child to cut the sandwich into: one rectangle and two triangles, one rectangle and two squares, two triangles and two squares, etc.

Adjust for a younger child

For the young child, cutting the sandwich into two rectangles and two triangles will be enough of a challenge.
