Extending this activity

  • -Read "Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats or any other favorite book. Point out how the author uses pictures and text as well as spaces and periods to help us read and understand.

-As you go about the activities of your weekend, encourage the child to be thinking about favorite moments he might want to describe in the upcoming Weekend News.

Adjust for an older child

The older child may be ready to elaborate his story with more sentences describing the beginning, middle, and end. Staple three sheets together so he can write each part of the story on a separate page of the booklet.

Adjust for a younger child

Encourage the younger child to verbalize his own sentence, and then you can write it for him to illustrate.
