Extending this activity

  • -Children love to collect data about themselves and their surroundings! Go outdoors and survey your neighbors. Possible questions children can ask include: what is your favorite animal?, what is your favorite season?, who is your favorite sports team?, etc? Once the data is collected using tally marks, bring it indoors and create a bar graph.

-Read "Miles and Miles of Reptiles" by Tish Rabe and chart with tally marks which reptiles prefer to live on land, in the water, or a combination of both.

Adjust for an older child

Take the data collected and turn it into a bar graph.

Adjust for a younger child

Use stickers or pictures of the foods when making the graph. This will make it easier for the child to 'read' the data in the graph.
