Using stuffed animals, invite your child to join you in the role of zookeeper as you describe some characteristics of each animal.

Extending this activity

  • -Read "The View at the Zoo" by Kathleen Long Bostrom and talk about the details that animals might use to describe the human visitors at the zoo.

    -Repeat this activity with other sets of toys like construction vehicles. For example, “This is a bulldozer and it can move earth from one place to another.”

Adjust for an older child

Invite the older child to share two or three details about each animal.

Adjust for a younger child

Focus on extended modeling of this activity with younger children by naming the animal and providing an important detail about the animal. Gradually, invite the child to contribute more and more language as he is ready.
